I have to say I had high hopes for these as my first pair of Loake shoes. Given the option of these or the Cheaney double monk I opted for these. These shoes absolutely destroyed my feet! As someone who has participated in endurance events around Europe, my feet looked worse in these after. It was unfortunate that I didn't have a choice but to wear them for the 2 days following their purchase, the second day of wear resulting in me having to bathe my feet in order to soften the dried blood to remove my socks. After 10 days of healing I wore them again for the first time a realised that there were creases in the leather across the toe cap. Something that most certainly should not be there. I subsequently returned them and they were sent to the factory in which they were put back on the last and steamed to remove the creases. 10 days later I had them returned to find the creases back 10 minutes later. I am now the owner of an alternative Loake product and fingers crossed there is no repeat of the above.
Just to clarify, I did use shoe trees and treated the shoes with the Loake shoe cream and both polish and cream from Saphir. Also, I had these shoes fitted, I did not purchase them online.

One thing that I will credit is the Loake team. Their patience and professionalism was greatly appreciated and they always had my best interests at heart when being the intermediary between myself and the factory. So a significant thank you from me for that.

Obviously this review does not reflect on the company as a whole, but I am simply being honest in my experiences with this shoe and it has not tainted my opinion on the brand or their quality even though this was my first purchase. Looking at the reviews above it is obvious that there are countless people over the moon with theirs. It's just unfortunate that I wasn't, which is a shame as they looked fantastic!

I bought these double monks in black after discovering the Loake 1880 line via two pairs of Strands. I knew these would fit, as they use the same last as the Strand. However, what I didn't expect was the huge comfort. As the buckle clasps are attached to the show by (invisible) elasticated straps, the shoe is immediately comfortable and forgiving directly out of the box. I now plan to buy this shoe in brown and also in suede. If you are hesitating, I would suggest you take the plunge. You will not be disappointed.
